指点字通訳のエキスパートが通訳を行う時の指先のタッピング強度を圧力センサーにより計測した圧力値を対象として,プロソディのある音声を指点字へ通訳した場合とそうでない場合(平坦な韻律の音声の指点字通訳およびビープ音に合わせたタッピング)を比較した結果,タッピング強度の時間変動は,プロソディのある音声を通訳する際に有意に大きかった。また,指点字通訳者がプロソディのある音声を通訳している際には,そうでない場合と比較して,右前頭前野(眼窩前頭回)の酸化ヘモグロビン量が有意に増加した。また、両実験で使用された音声刺激の話者の情動を推測する課題を健常対照群54名に実施し、同一の音声を1名の熟練した通訳者が通訳した指点字を3名の盲ろう者が読み取り,健常者と同様の話者情動評定を行った。健常者と盲ろう者のPearsonの積率相関係数は,肯定的および平坦なプロソディに関してはそれぞれr=.995,r=.987と高い相関を示し,否定的プロソディではr=.642であった。これらの結果から,盲ろう者が熟練通訳者の指点字から話者の情動を読み取ることができることが明らかになった。眼窩前頭回はプロソディを含む非言語情報処理に関与する部位であることも知られており,本研究の結果から,通訳者が非言語的側面に注意を向けた通訳処理を行っているかを示す,指点字通訳時のプロソディ処理レベルのインデックスとしてこの領域の活動が使用できる可能性が示された。本研究の結果から,盲ろう者の指点字読解および通訳者の指点字通訳では,いずれもプロソディ情報が指のタッピングを通じて表現・利用されているエビデンスが示された。またこのエビデンスを根拠に,プロソディ情報の活用を指点字読解および通訳の訓練課程において強調することは,盲ろう者のコミュニケーションをさらなる拡大に資することができる。
