We investigated core sediment from ponds and lakes along the coast of southwestern Japanese Islands along the Nankai Trough to reveal pre-historical evidence of Nankai earthquakes. The average recurrence interval of tsunami events were 300-350 years. This value was much larger than the value, 100-200 years, of the historical events. This result implies that relatively large Nankai earthquakes only have been recorded in the sediments.
