The purpose of this study is to identify the key features of electronic nursing records (ENRs) to improve the quality of nursing practice. When early ENR systems replaced paper forms, their many screens often interfered with the thinking process of nurses. We interviewed 31 nurses at 16 hospitals and recorded videos when they used ENR systems before their shift. The information the nurses needed depended on the nurses' knowledge and experience. Less experienced nurses needed only orders, the patients' chief complaint, whereas experienced nurses required justification of orders, estimation of patient's prognosis, and management issues. The design of ENR systems should comply with the thinking process of nurses that this research has identified.

本研究旨在探讨电子护理记录之主要特性，以提升护理实务品质。当早期的ENR系统取代纸质表格时，它们的许多屏幕经常干扰护士的思维过程。我们采访了16家医院的31名护士，并记录了他们在轮班前使用ENR系统的视频。护士所需要的信息取决于护士的知识和经验。经验不足的护士只需要订单，病人的主要投诉，而有经验的护士需要的理由订单，估计病人的预后和管理问题。ENR系统的设计应符合本研究所确定的护士的思维过程。
