A study on the process of the accumulation of geographical information concerning the northern area in Edo Japan, mainly through the analysis of maps and terrestrial globes.

通过对江户时代有关史料、地图和地球球图的分析，论证了江户时代日本周边北部地区(北方领地、江户和俄罗斯)地理资料积累的过程和结果，以及收集到的信息的意义。本研究以抄袭西方地图的两位关键人物大树根德和崎崎茂为研究对象，对阐明他们在十八世纪末十九世纪初扩大日本北部地区地理信息存储方面的重要作用作出了贡献。

The process and results of the accumulation of geographical data concerning the northern area around Japan (the northern territory, Ezo and Russia) in the Edo period and the significance of its information collected have been demonstrated through the analysis of relevant historical sources as well as maps and terrestrial globes made in the same period. Having focused on the two key persons Otsuki Gentaku and Hazama Shigetomi, both of whom copied maps brought from the West, this study has made a contribution to clarify their important roles in enlarging the storage of geographical information on the northern area around Japan in the end of the eighteenth century and in the beginning of the nineteenth century.
