The objective of this study was to rethink the tendency toward "result-orientation" of English and “process-orientation” of Japanese. We comprehensively examined the orientedness, which has often been discussed mainly on the lexical level, based on detailed analyses of cultural constructions besides language and on various language phenomena such as lexical, phrase, sentence, and discourse levels. The research results support the traditional views of all the levels. However, on the lexical level, we encountered several examples that had ambiguous interpretations and concluded that it is plausible that whether or not a lexical item can be interpreted as a “result” is explained in terms of metonymy.

本研究的目的是重新思考英语的“结果导向”和日语的“过程导向”。本文通过对语言之外的文化结构的详细分析，从词汇、短语、句子和语篇等不同的语言现象出发，对以往主要在词汇层面上讨论的指向性进行了全面的考察。研究结果支持了各个层面的传统观点。然而，在词汇层面上，我们遇到了几个例子，有歧义的解释，并得出结论，这是合理的，无论是一个词项可以解释为“结果”是根据转喻。
