個別には分解できないほど遠くにある宇宙初期の天体の光は, おり重なって, 全天からやってくる等方的な宇宙背景放射として観測される.本研究では, 「あかり」衛星により赤外線のほぼ全波長域にわたる宇宙背景放射の観測を実施し, データを解析した.その結果, 宇宙赤外線背景放射の存在を検証するとともに, そのわずかな強度むらには宇宙で最初にできた星や銀河の痕跡が残されている可能性があることがわかった.
