海底洞窟から採取した堆積物コア試料に含まれる160個体の微小二枚貝の酸素同位体比を測定した. その結果, 現在よりもかなり寒冷・乾燥化した冬期が, 6,300年前, 5,550年前. 5,200年前に起きており, それらの期間は太陽活動の弱体期にあたる. このことから, 日本南方域の気候は, 太陽活動の影響を受けることが分かった.
