地球の過去で最も温暖な時期であった白亜紀の地層から、精密な地磁気の変化史を読み取ることによって、過去の太平洋域に生息した生物の進化とその地球環境との関連を明らかにした. 研究対象は、北海道根室地域に分布する白亜紀後期(約7千万年前)の根室層群と呼ばれる堆積岩である. アンモナイトなどの大型化石を例に、それらの形態や生息域の変遷を、地球磁場極性の変化を某準とする年代軸を某準として復元することに成功した.
