筆者らは, 将来のブロードバンドサービスの本格導入を支えるネットワークインフラとして, 波長多重(Wavelength-division multiplexing, WDM)と複数ファイバによる空間多重を組み合わせたマルチファイバ型WDM 方式を世界に先がけて独自に提案している。この方式はノード構成が簡易で, 光パスの設定が容易である。しかし, 同一ファイバ内で波長を再利用しないため, 帯域の使用効率が小さいという問題があった。本研究では双方向伝送技術を適用することによりその問題を解決できることを明らかにした。また, 光パスの設定が容易である特徴を活かして, トラヒック変動に対応して光パスをダイナミックに設定する制御方式を提案した。さらに, ノードに用いられる光スイッチの構成原理に関して, 新たな構成法を提案した。
