疼痛行動には様々な炎症性メディエーターが関与しているがその中でもセロトニンに注目した。セロトニンが実際にホルマリンの濃度依存性に末梢に放出されることを確認した。肥満細胞膜安定剤、5-HT2A、5-HT2C受容体拮抗薬を用いてホルマリンテストとc-fosの染色を行った。いずれの薬剤もホルマリンテストの疼痛行動とc-fosの発現を抑制した。以上から炎症の際には主に末梢の肥満細胞から5-HTが放出され、1次求心性神経線維の末梢終末に存在する5-HT2A ・5-HT2C受容体を介して、痛みを引き起こしていると考えられた。
