新規Niban遺伝子は、Tsc2mutantであるEkerラット腎癌の多段階発癌モデルからdifferential display方を用いてラット腎癌に発現している遺伝子として発見された遺伝子である。同遺伝子の機能は未知であるが、配列にdnaJmotifを有しておりストレスタンパクの一種と想定されている。NibanはEkerラットでは腎癌および腎腫瘍発生前の異常な腎尿細管にも発現が認められるが、進行した腎癌例では発現が低下しており、腎多段階発癌の早期に関与する遺伝子と考えられている。ヒトでは、正常腎には発現していないがヒト散発性腎癌に発現がみられている。甲状腺腫瘍におけるNiban遺伝子の発現を検討することによって発がん過程における重要なマーカー遺伝子としての可能性を検討した。甲状腺検体129例に対して免疫染色を行った。染色の結果、腫瘍細胞の細胞質に染色性を示し、特に好酸性細胞であるHurthle cell tumorに強く染まりが認められた。また、乳頭癌においても染色性が比較的強く認められた。Hurthle cell tumorの全例および乳頭癌の81%に発現を認めた。その一方で、正常甲状腺組織では一切の発現をみなかった。また、橋本病においても全例が染色された。橋本病変は橋本病および他の腫瘍内の橋本様病変に関わらず、同様の結果であった。乳頭癌では,原発巣やリンパ節転移巣ともに染色性を示していた。また、その症例と治療経過の検討をカルテを参照にretrospectiveに検討を行った。その結果原発巣の染色程度に関し、その腫瘍の再発やリンパ節転移の頻度との関連はみとめられなかった。また、リンパ節への染色程度と予後に大きな関連はなかった。
