代表的な加齢性眼疾患である加齢黄斑変性患者を対象に酸化ストレスに関するマーカーの検索を行った。その結果、加齢黄斑変性患者群では眼底疾患や緑内障を有さないコントロール群と比べて、酸化損傷マーカーであるCoQ10酸化率の上昇、抗酸化因子である葉酸・リコピンの低下が認められ、本疾患の発症に酸化ストレス・抗酸化因子のバランスが関与していることが示唆された。また毛髪中のミネラル検索も行った。その結果、加齢黄斑変性患者ではヒ素や水銀などの有害ミネラルが多く、金属毒性が疾患に関連している可能性が示唆された。なお、酸化ストレスに関連する遺伝子多型の検索に関しては、本研究期間に行うことはできなかった。
