本研究は、日露戦争(1904-05)の視覚イメージを、絵画作品や新聞・雑誌等を含む当時の多様なメディアを横断的・包括的に調査し、分析と考察を行うものである。従来未調査の部分が多く残されていた日露戦争と視覚文化のかかわりについて、基本的な見取図を描くことができた。また、戦争の表象をめぐる多様なあり方が明らかになるにつれ、日露戦争のイメージ形成の道筋が一つではなく多層的になされていること、戦争の推移に連れてその様相が移りかわってゆく様子をとらえることができた。こうした観察から、日露戦争の視覚イメージが、当時の社会状況と不可分であること、また「文明国」の「国民」を表象する傾向の多いことが明らかとなった。
