本研究の目的は発展途上国における貧困の世代的再生産と教育の関係性を明らかにすることである。そのために,北インドの地方都市において各社会階層に属する若者から生活史を聞き取り,それらを事例的に比較分析するという方法をとった。その結果,貧困家族の教育を通じた階層上昇への期待は高いが,貧困家族の子どもが教育を通じて階層上昇することは容易ではないことが明らかになった。また,その困難の背景には,家族の貧困はもちろんのこと,その不利を助長する社会環境があることも明らかになった。
