金属酵素の活性中心機能を模倣する金属錯体と蛋白質の設計と合成を行うと共に、生命分子の誕生と進化の過程を人工的に再現した「試験管内分子選択・進化システム」を独自に開発した。そして、このシステムの利用により、膨大なペプチドライブラリーの中から、金属酵素様の触媒機能を発現する人工ペプチドの選択に至った。これにより、金属錯体形成・基質分子認識・触媒機能を同時に発現する人工金属ペプチド酵素の新たな創生法の確立に成功した。
