本研究では,最新の統計技法を使用して,南氷洋ミンククジラの個体数をより精度良く推定する方法を開発した.開発したモデルをIWCから提供を受けた南氷洋ミンククジラの実際の目視データに当てはめることにより,偏りの小さい南氷洋の個体数推定値を得た.その結果,従来の方法で知られているよりも,個体数の変動は小さいことが明らかになった.
