食品の安全・安心の確保を大目的として、近年、大規模施設で行われるようになってきた植物水耕栽培における微生物の動態をモニタリングするために、蛍光活性染色法、マイクロコロニー法、マイクロコロニーin situハイブリダイゼーション(MC-FISH)法など、培養に依存しない新たな迅速・高精度な細菌数測定法を確立した。また本研究における栽培条件下では、培養液中に混入した大腸菌は、水耕栽培にともなってその増殖活性が大きく低下することがわかった。
