项目摘要

平成24年6月2日、名古屋大学において開催された日本アメリカ学会第46回年次大会において「ジェーン・アダムズの平和に関する思想と実践」というタイトルで自由論題報告を行った。この報告は、アメリカの社会福祉の先駆者として知られてきたジェーン・アダムズをプラグマティズムの哲学者として再評価しようという近年のアメリカにおけるアダムズ研究の動向に触発されたものである。20世紀初頭のアメリカ社会において最も尊敬された女性であったアダムズは、第一次世界大戦中、アメリカの参戦を支持しなかったことで、母国アメリカにおける名声を失った。しかし、アダムズはこの時期に国際的な女性平和運動においける自身の指導的地位を確立させた。また、アダムズは大戦以前から1920年代にかけて、数冊の平和に関する論考を出版した。本報告は、これらの論考を読み直し、アダムズの平和に関する思考と実践の変化をとらえることを目指したものである。特に、アダムズの著作のなかではこれまであまり注目されてこなかった『戦時における平和とパン』(1922)をとりあげ、同書における語り手の不確定性について、プラグマティズムの哲学に影響を受けた思考と実践の痕跡として読み込むことのできる可能性を指摘した。アダムズは20世紀前半のキリスト教リベラリズムの世俗的な展開、およびその平和運動との結びつきを検討する上で重要、かつ独特の視点を提供しうる人物である。今後、博論を執筆する際には、本報告の内容も組み込まれることとなるだろう。なお、この学会報告については、特に革新主義期の研究者から好意的な評価を受け、雑誌論文としての投稿も勧められた。しかし、今後数年をかけてさらに議論を深め、英米圏において発行されている思想史関連の学会誌への投稿をめざす予定である。
