フランス18世紀の作家ジャン＝ジャック・ルソーの『社会契約論』において定式化される国制理論を外交の側面から研究すした。ルソーの政治思想を研究するにあたって、ルソーが18世紀平和論の系譜のなかで同時代の著作家たちの思想の受容と転倒の過程を理論的基礎として結実させる経緯を探る余地が残されていると考えためである。国制理論と外交政策との密接な連関を明らかにすると同時に、作家の政治思想の生成過程を辿ることで、もっぱら内政の観点から研究されてきた『社会契約論』について、外交という観点から新たな解釈を提示することを目標とした。今年度はパリ国立図書館をはじめとする施設において資料の収集と分析を行うと同時に、昨年度に引き続きパリ第7大学のルソー研究者ヤニック・セイテ教授のもとで研究を進めた。主にフランス18世紀の旅行記及び、宣教師あるいは修道士によって書かれた著作において繰り返し論じられる未開人の「キリスト教化」と「文明化」の二つの軸からなる問題系が、ルソーの政治共同体設立と立法者の理論に、政治と宗教そして説得と音楽といった観点からどの程度影響を与えているのかを検証している。またディドロとダランベールによって編纂された『百科全書』のデータ化を進めている研究会に参加するなど、最先端のフランス18世紀研究に触れ知見を広めている。2017年10月に平凡社より出版された『〈ポスト68年〉と私たち：「現代思想と政治の現在」に収録されたガブリエル・ラディカによるルソーの所有権に関する論考を翻訳した。
