これまでに明治期に刊行された中国史関係の通史書を可能な限り収集した。そのうち漢文で編まれたもの（明治9年から32年までの13種、断代史を含む）を分析し、以下のことを解明した。すなわち、那珂通世の『支那通史』などごく少数のものを除けば、明治漢文中国史のほとんどは正史や『資治通鑑』、『十八史略』など中国の史書を抄録・節録して編まれた。それゆえ、その歴史知は中国の史書に由来しており、その歴史叙述も「春秋の筆法」や華夷観念、および中国を中心とする天下的世界認識から影響を受けている。那珂通世は欧米の万国史にならって王朝を跨いだ時代区分や章節体を採用し、新しい中国史叙述のスタイルを確立した。しかし、『支那通史』は、その歴史知が中国の史書に由来した点や「春秋の筆法」、華夷観念の影響を受けた点においては、他の漢文中国史と同様である。今日では、明治期に刊行された13種の漢文中国史のうち、『支那通史』以外はほとんどがその存在すら知られていない。その背景には、漢文中国史を含む明治期の「漢史」や「支那史」を東洋史学が克服すべき旧い学問とみなす「近代的」な学問観があった。本研究によって、明治期の日本には西洋の歴史学の影響を受けた「近代的」中国史叙述だけではなく、江戸藩校の漢史教育を通じて受け継がれた儒家の伝統的な中国史叙述も存在していたことが明らかになった。明治期刊行の中国史関係の通史書が清末期の中国で受け入れられた背景にはこのような知の連環があった。
