本研究は、(1)東アジアという視点から「日本古代木簡の源流と特質」を探ることを最大の目標とする。中国・韓国の木簡研究にも正面から向き合い、その方法論を学ぶとともに、日本古代木簡の研究で培われた方法論の発信につとめ、その相乗効果によって日本古代木簡研究の飛躍を図りたい。関連して、(2)木簡研究から導き出される〈文書機能論〉の観点から、従来の〈文書様式論〉に依拠した古文書学を再検討し、新たな史料学に向けた提言をする。さらに、(3)木簡研究の成果を日本古代国家成立論のなかに反映させることも狙う。(2)(3)によって、木簡研究の有効性を示したい。こうした目標のもと、本年度は特に次のような研究実績をあげた。第一に、上記の視点に立った研究成果について、韓国国立京慶大学校人文学術院ＨＫ＋事業団国際シンポジウム「木簡に反映された古代東アジアの行政と行政制度」において、日本・韓国・中国の研究者に対して、「日本古代文書木簡の展開」と題する口頭報告をおこなった。また、韓国の木簡学会において、「三上喜孝「日本古代木簡の型式分類と機能的分類」に対するコメント」と題して、木簡の型式分類・機能的分類に関する研究現状と課題について口頭報告をおこなった。第二に、論文「宮都の墨書土器」を発表し、木簡との関係についても言及しつつ、土器の生産・納品、土器の保管・使用という場面に即して、土器に墨書する意味について検討した。第三に、論文「古代王宮の護り」を発表し、宮都出土の木簡も活用しながら、王宮警備のあり方について検討した。第四に、論文「畿内の駅家と駅路」を発表し、木簡も活用しながら、畿内の駅家と駅路の特徴について検討した。
