西欧近代の建築用語のわが国における翻訳実態を精査し、翻訳語を一つの「分析指標」とみることにより西欧建築文化の移入過程の特徴ならびにその受容の特質を明らかにするものであり、その中でも明治5年という突出して早い時期に刊行された翻訳書である村田文夫、山田貢一郎訳『西洋家作ひながた』(原著 C. Bruce. Allen, Cottage Building or hints for improving the dwellings of the working classes and the labouring poor)を対象とするものである。初年度は主に『西洋家作ひながた』(玉山堂版)に記載されている建築用語の抽出、および翻訳方法の検討をおこなったが、記載中の訳語については西欧圏にその概念があるとみなされる建築用語に対して、現在の意味から比較してやや持異な訳語があてられている事例を確認できた。たとえば計画的分野に相当する語句living-roomに対応する訳語としては「住居部屋(すまいべや)」があてられており、「居間」という語句は翻訳文中にはいっさい確認できなかった。この他にも建築構造、材料、設備等の建築用語においても同様な形跡が確認できた。また、翻訳方法に関して和語、漢語からの建築用語の翻訳方法の検証を行うための語句整理を行った。その結果訳文中の漢字の語句に対して音読みと訓読みの併記のかたちで左右にルビが振られている事例を約170確認した。またルビの活用の他に訳注をつけて説明を付加している事例を約110確認できた。このようにひとつの語句に対する翻訳方法に違いがみられることから、日本社会の建築用語の知識の実像や訳者の興味の範囲に注目して精査をすることを次年度課題に付加した。最終年度はこれまで抽出した建築用語を整理・分類したうえで原文の建築用語との比較を行い、そして『西洋家作ひながた』刊行当時とその後の英和辞書等に着目することで西欧近代起源の建築用語の移入過程について考察する予定であったが、研究代表者の研究継続不可能事由により補助事業廃止が決定したため、具体的成果創出の機会は見送られた。
