Culture-led Rural Revitalisation as Place-making Catalyst - The Roles of Architecture and Cultural Tourism

This research project investigates the roles of architecture and cultural tourism in the revitalisation of rural communities in Japan, focussing on the case studies of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Field in Niigata Prefecture, the Setouchi Triennale in Kagawa Prefecture, and the Kumamoto ArtPolis in Kumamoto Prefecture.After reviewing relevant literature, two fieldwork trips to the the Setouchi Triennale were conducted in July and October 2013, documenting sites, collecting information, and interviewing stakeholders at various levels – from directors and curators, to artists and architects, to volunteer participants. Some of this research was undertaken with international collaborating researchers Dr Ari Seligmann (Monash), who made fieldwork trips to Kumamoto ArtPolis; and Prof. Adrian Favell (Sciences-Po), who interviewed a number of participating artists.Two articles based on this fieldwork were published based in journals addressing scholarly audiences in architectural and art fields. These articles explored new ways of thinking about "place", using the concept of "floating constituencies" linking global and local communities around built sites; and the idea that "amalgams of fictions" mediated through artistic forms are required to form meaningful places. In addition, fieldwork data and initial hypotheses for its categorisation and interpretation were presented and discussed at a research workshop at Waseda University in October 2013.
