本課題では，人工ニューラルネットワーク(N.N.)を用いた記憶素子の記憶容量最大化を狙った。3年計画の1年目で，記憶された情報がネットワーク上にどのようにして分散され保持されるのか，原理に係る知見を得るべく，N.N.の数理モデルと最適化理論を併用して記憶容量最大化問題を導いた。また，この複雑な問題に対し，近年注目されている進化計算を援用して制約付き最適化問題を上手く解くための計算手法を開発した。この手法を活用して，記憶メカニズムの解明と記憶容量の限界までの最大化に取り組む予定であった。しかし，初年度の途中，研究代表者の所属研究室で主宰教員が急逝したことと前後して，本研究課題の遂行を妨げる多数の事象が発生した。例えば，課題実施中2年間で2度専門性の全く異なる研究室への異動を命じられた。亡くなった教員の居室や物品（研究代表者は使用していない）の整理・処分等を，部署の責任者（学科主任）から命じられ，指示は受けても支援は受けられない状態で従事した。これらの無関係な業務が，研究のための時間を奪った。また，異動先の研究室で，専門外の分野について一定以上の水準で指導することも求められた。このような事態によって，研究代表者の心身不調が顕在化し，とりわけ2年目以降，本課題の遂行が極めて困難となった。その上，異動先の確保もままならないまま任期が満了し，研究代表者は所属機関を退職することとなった。遂に，所属機関喪失を理由として，本課題を廃止せざるを得なくなった。本課題は未完成であって，継続によって更なる発展が期待される。なお，研究代表者の事例を踏まえて，各機関において，研究教育環境の改善（任期制の及ぼす影響，若手教員への支援等），研究費制度の改善について，真剣に検討されることを強く期待する。他の研究者が，このような不幸な事態に陥ることが絶対にないように，対策を講じていただくことを切望する。
