この研究は、芸術表現・活動をコミュニケーションの視点からとらえ直すことで、作家や作品を多元的かつ科学的に解釈可能な対象としてとらえようとする試みである。そのためには、伝統的な"造形言語"に加え、伝達理論(メッセージ性、伝達過程、手法・手段など)、比較文化論、認知科学などの理論と方法の援用が不可欠となる。ここで取り上げる対象は、(1)先行事例の特定・検証、とくに造形理論・言語に関わる研究、(2)伝達理論、認知科学、記号学などの参考文献・資料の特定、(3)個別事例の取材(作品、インスタレーション、伝統的なイベントなど)、(4)Paris Photo2008への取材(今回の会議とイベントはとくにアジアの潮流に照準を合わせた内容構成のため)(5)取材・収集した資料のデータベース化(分類と整理の枠組みづくり)、(6)研究者間のネットワークづくり、などが想定されたが、今回の研究では、大きく先に挙げた(3)(4)(5)の項目に対象を絞って進めた。なかでも、(1)(5)の作業は先々の研究に欠かせない素材や資料の検索システムに繋がる内容である。今回は資料分析と活用法の仮説にもとづくラフな枠組み作成した。データ化する素材や資料の質的・量的拡充とともに、枠組み自体の精度が強化されると考える。(2)(3)については、東京都写真美術館、日本産業デザイン振興会などとのコンタクトによる各種展覧会・イベントに関わる資料収集。また近年、注目を集めた展覧会・催しについて資料収集を行い、暫定的な分類・整理を行った。(3)Paris Photo2008への参加・取材は、今回の研究主題に対する視点と方法を客観化するうえで大きな収穫があった。今回はアジアの特性に焦点を当てた点、日本人キュレーターによる企画が、ヨーロッパの状況や感性との違いを浮き彫りにした点で、分析指標の精度を高めることができた。また、補助的な成果として、(4)(6)にあげたネットワークの構築が国内・外をとおして進んだ点も加えておく。
