調査研究の効率をはかるために、京都の国際日本文化研究センターや、愛媛県の高畠華宵大正ロマン館。宮沢賢治記念館などで、西欧近代をいち早く取り入れながらも日本古来の伝統にこだわり続けた地元出身の作家たちの第一次資料や文献の調査、関係者インタヴューなどに重点を置いた。具体的には、1)両性具有的な人物描写で著名な漫画家・竹宮恵子が全作品を捧げている謎の挿絵画家「高畠華宵」について調べるために、著作権を管理している遺族のインタヴューを行い、テープを起こし、英語に翻訳した。これらの情報をもとに、華宵の年代譜を作成する予定である。華宵の来歴の最も謎の部分は、第二次大戦後、弟子の一人を連れてロサンゼルスに移住し、美術学校の設立準備にあたったが、弟子の不慮の死により計画を断念して1年で帰国した経緯である。その足跡の詳細は、ロスでの調査に託されよう。遺族との会見で得た大きな成果は、「高畠華宵」再評価の先鞭をつける使命を負わされ、今後の論文執筆に際して全作品の掲載に関する著作権を許可してもらったことである。2)古文書『病名彙解』などに記載された「フタナリ」に関する記述を解読。近世期における日本や中国の見解を知る手掛かりとなった。3)京都の京都国立博物館において、『病草紙』(12世紀の絵巻物・国宝)などに「ふたなり」に関する描写を発見し、模写版のコピーを得ることが出来た。4)宮沢賢治記念館では、『銀河鉄道の夜』のカムパネルラ解釈にかんして、「中有」「中陰」「中間生」という仏教用語が多用されることの背景を探るための資料収集をすることが出来た。5)その他、谷崎潤一郎に関する文献・資料もほとんど完了し、初期作品に「両性具有イメージ」が顕著であることに関して、傍証を得ることが出来た。以上、申請書に掲げた調査予定は完了した。予算の関係で沖縄調査は断念せざるを得なかったが、別途計画したい。
