本研究は、近世日本における天然痘や麻疹などの流行性伝染病の伝播秩序について地理学的手法を用いて解明することである。昨年度までの研究で、天然痘の流行過程の一端が明らかになり、それらを諸学会・研究会で報告した結果、一定の評価を受けたため、本年は、以下のような研究成果の公開・報告に重点を置き活動した。(1)山形県飯豊町旧中津川地区の天然痘流行について、とくに近世農村社会における天然痘の伝播過程に着目して研究内容を整理し、学術雑誌「地理学評論」に投稿し、掲載された。(2)(1)の内容を骨子として第14回国際歴史地理学会で口頭発表したものをProceedingsに掲載した。(3)山形県飯豊町旧中津川地区の天然痘流行について記された史料について、一定の学術価値があると判断し、史料の所蔵元である山形大学附属博物館と共同で全文翻刻したうえで、解説を付して史料集を刊行した。上記の活動を平行して、同地域でおきた麻疹の流行について、分析を開始した。まずよく知られる文久2年の全国的な麻疹大流行についての文献収集を行った。その結果、麻疹の伝播速度が極めて速いことが明らかになった。続いて山形県飯豊町旧中津川地区における麻疹の発症記録の調査を行った。そこには、天然痘の史料と同様に、村ごとに第1発症者確認日が記されている。この日時を、流行速度を表す値と便宜的に位置づけ伝播速度を分析した。その結果、(1)天然痘の場合と異なり、麻疹の伝播は距離と伝播日数(14村の中で一番早く流行がはじまった村から当該村が流行するまでの日数)の間に距離減衰効果は認められなかった。すなわち、飛び火的に流行が諸村で起こっていた。(2)感染者は、子どもも含んでいるが成人が多い特徴が見出せた。以上の知見をふまえた上で、現在、麻疹の伝播過程を検討中である。

This study is based on geographical methods to explain the transmission order of natural pox and measles epidemics in modern Japan.
