项目摘要

19世紀後半から20世紀初期(1870年代から1920年)のアメリカ文学において、「アメリカンガール」のイメージがどう構築されているのか、またそのイメージが19世紀から20世紀初期のアメリカ文学史における女性表象の問題の中でどう位置づけられるのかという問題の考察を目的として研究を行い、その成果を博士論文の一部としてまとめた他、研究成果の一部を口頭発表・論文発表という形で発表した。平成20年度中は、研究目的に記した以下の2点について研究を行った。1.1870年代から1910年代のアメリカ文学において「アメリカンガール」の問題に関わっている小説を細かく考察することにより、世紀転換期にどのような「アメリカンガール」のタイプが文学の中で構築されたのかを検討する。2.1870年以前のアメリカ小説における「アメリカンガール」あるいは女性の表象を考察し、1で得られた世紀転換期の「アメリカンガール」のイメージと比較する。研究においては、Henry James、Edith Wharton、Willa Catherの3作家の作品を中心とする1970年代から1910年代のアメリカ文学作品の分析を行った他、同時代の出版物や絵画など他のメディア・芸術における「アメリカンガール」表象や1870年以前のアメリカ文学における女性像とも比較し、女性表象に関する分析を深めた。特に、アメリカで短期間(約3週間)の資料収集を行い、LifeやLadies' Home Journal等の雑誌に掲載された大衆小説や挿絵(特にCharles Dana Gibsonの"Gibson Girl")の考察、John Singer SargentやMary Cassatt等による絵画との比較を行ったことで、日本では手に入り難い資料を考察に盛り込み、文学作品に現れるアメリカンガール像をより広い視座からとらえることを試みた点に大きな意義があると考えられる。
