项目摘要

本年度は、17世紀前半のイギリス・カピチュレーションの更新状況とその内容について分析し、さらに前年度までの研究成果と合わせて研究課題についての包括的な成果を論文としてまとめ、発表した。17世紀初頭には、後退した両国関係を回復するべく派遣された大使グローバーが黒海交易への参入を実現し、続く大使ピンダーが1614年カピチュレーション更新しているが、ここからレヴァント交易における絹輸入拡大の傾向を見て取ることができた。同時期に東インド会社による東インド物産輸入が活発化し、さらに1620年代以降には元来東方物産の輸入を目的としていたレヴァント交易が毛織物輸出に重点を移し、後に絹輸入との単品目交換という特徴的な交易形態へと変化していくことを鑑みれば、該カピチュレーションがレヴァント交易の動向を敏速に反映していたとことが分かった。またこの時期までのイギリス大使らは、その経歴からレヴァント・カンパニーの一員としての立場を踏襲していたと見られるが、商人としてレヴァントの事情に精通した経験は大使の資質と不可分であり、地中海域での海賊被害や大使館経営の金銭的困窮からレヴァント交易が危機に陥る中、その資質の高さによってオスマン宮廷内で尊重されていた様子が伺えた。特に大使ローはアルジェリア・チュニスの海賊問題への対策として1622年にカピチュレーションを更新し、交易活動を保護しているが、オスマン宮廷での信頼がその原動力となっていたことが明らかになった。以上を踏まえ作成した論文では、16世紀末から17世紀初頭には、イギリスの対オスマン帝国外交はレヴァント・カンパニーが主導し、イギリス大使らはレヴァント商人の要求を反映したカピチュレーションを獲得しているが、その交渉に際しては、金銭的負担或いは大使個人の資質によるオスマン宮廷中枢との人的紐帯が欠かせなかったと指摘出来た
