子ザルが母ザルから離れ始めると、母ザルは子ザルに注意を向け、危険な時には子ザルを保護しなくてはならない。しかし、母ザルは他の活動も行なう必要があるため子ザルばかりを見てはいられない。このように、子ザルの発達初期には、母ザルの子ザルへの投資と母ザル自身の活動の間に利害の葛藤が生じる。本研究では、母子が離れた場面での母子の関わりに注目し、葛藤の中で母子それぞれがどのように知性を発揮しているのかを明らかにすることを目的とした。母ザルが子ザルを見る行動であるマターナル・モニタリング行動に注目し、母ザルがどのように子ザルを見ているのかを分析した結果、母ザルは、子ザルがより危険であると思われるときに頻繁に子ザルを見ていた。一方、母ザルはマクーナル・モニタリング行動と同時に行うことのできない重要な行動を行っているときには、子ザルを見る頻度が低下していた。次に、子ザルが危険を感じた時に発する鳴き声(Whistle/Scream)と、母ザルが離れた子ザルを回収する行動に注目し、子ザルは保護をそれほど必要としない場面で過度に鳴くことで、母ザルからより多くの投資を引き出そうとしているかどうかを検討した。その結果、子ザルが鳴き声によって母ザルを操作していることを支持するデータは得られず、子ザルの鳴き声は保護を求めているというよりも、母ザルの注意を喚起するために発されている可能性が示唆された。
