本研究の課題の1つは、スリランカにおける老人ホームを閉鎖空間としてではなく、老いと介護をめぐる積徳行為によって歴史的に構築されてきた「開放空間」として捉え、施設外との関係を捨象していた従来の施設研究に新たな視点を導入することであった。これを念頭に論文「現代スリランカにおける慈善型老人ホームの成立」では、地域社会の人びとの直接的な寄附によって支えられる慈善型老人ホームの歴史的系譜を明らかにした。また、この開放性が促す施設内外の交流が入居者の生活を経済的に支えるだけでなく、精神的にも豊かにしうるのはどのようにしてか、研究会発表や論文(投稿中)に整理した。2つめの課題は、こうした施設において老い死に向き合うこと、介抱し看取ることが、どのように来世や転生といった概念と関係しているかを明らかにすることであった。入居者たちは施設への入所を余儀なくされた自らの運命を苦悩として受け止めながらも、朽ちゆく身体をみつめ来世にそなえて善行を積むことを理想とし、自主的に食事療法を行ったり、動植物や入居者、スタッフや寄附者をケアしたり、信仰実践や趣味に取り組むなどして心身の養生に励んでいた。また、寝たきりの入居者に対する施設スタッフの仕事は食事を通した介抱をしながら他界までを見守ることであり、西洋社会の施設研究でしばしば言及されてきた死の受容/隠蔽や延命をめぐる葛藤は問題ではなかった。但し、寝たきり老人や、死を迎えた者と看取る者が関わり合う臨終の場では、家や地域ではあたりまえに用意されていた社会関係やモノの得難さに起因する困難さや違和感が認識されていた。23年度は博士論文執筆を通して、こうした寝たきりや看取りの経験などを含む老人ホームの生活誌を詳述し、輪廻転生の世界の、老人ホームという現代的な状況における、老いる者と介護する者の社会文化的関係について理解を深めていく。
