前年度に引き続き、『古事記』を中心とした古代日本語の文字・表記に関わる問題の解明に取り組んだ。今年度は、『古事記』の訓字「有・在」「還・返」の研究に加え、平安初期から鎌倉・室町期までの「有・在」の表記の変遷を調査した。まず、『古事記』の「有・在」については、先行研究で意味差と文型差が指摘されているが、本研究では、両字の意味・用法の分析を推し進めることにより、両字の文型差と意味差は基本的に相関するものであり、しかし、文型が和化し、両字の文型差が失われた場合にも、字毎の基本的な意味差を保つ例が存するという結論に至った。『古事記』の「還・返」では、特に「還」について、漢籍の「還」の意味・用法との比較を行い、『古事記』の「還」の意味・用法が、漢籍のそれに基本的に一致しつつも、より狭いものであることを明らかにした。次に、「有・在」の表記の変遷については、両字は古字書などに共に「アリ」の訓が見え、『古事記』や『万葉集』の他、平安初期の『続日本紀』宣命には送り仮名から「アリ」と推定できる例が見つかるが、平安後期の『今昔物語集』になると、両字の送り仮名に顕著な差異が現れ、両字が基本的に別訓の表記を担うようになることが分かる。「有」は、平安初期から鎌倉・室町期まで「アリ」を表記する基本的な漢字であるが、「在」は、『今昔物語集』の他『平家物語』などでも、「在サ」「在マサ」などサ行の送り仮名例が優勢である。また、意味的に「在」には敬意が読み取れる。「在」は、『三宝絵詞』や『法華百座』などで既に「アリ」の表記漢字としてはきわめて劣勢か未使用であるが、『今昔物語集』のような状況は当該資料が早いものである。これらから、「在」の基本訓は平安後期以降に訓点以外の場に登場した「マシマス」を想定している。
