列島北方地域に展開した「周縁」独自の歴史を考古学的手法から解明するためには、これまで本州諸文化の歴史を復元するために培われてきた既成概念や方法論に捉われない、独自の分析視点や方法によって基礎資料を蓄積し、再検討する作業が不可欠であるだけでなく、文献史学や民族学との学際的協業がきわめて重要とされる。しかしながら、近年のアイヌ文化成立前段階の考古学では、隣接諸科学の成果に対し批判的検討を加えることなく鵜呑みにし、それに合うよう解釈を導くという方法が目立ち、およそ考古学的手法とはよべない研究が横行していた。そこで、考古学的手法による物質文化資料の分析から結論を導き、隣接諸科学の成果とすり合わせることを第一の目標とし、アイヌ文化成立前段階の土器研究をおこなった。それとともに、日本列島に比べ資料の質・量ともに貧弱なサハリン島で発掘調査をおこない、基礎資料の集成の徹底に努めた。本研究であつかった「北大式土器」は、アイヌ文化成立前段階のうちもっとも理解しづらい時期のものであり、この土器の基礎的研究の実践と、土器論から導かれる集団交流の様相の解明は、当該期研究の大きな飛躍につながると予想された。研究成果として結実した論文「北大式土器の型式編年」は、多大な紙数を割くことになったが、今後の研究の強固な礎になったと確信するものである。また、研究者が発掘調査をおこなったサハリン北東部は、極東ロシア諸地域のなかでももっとも調査が遅れている地域であり、この地域における発掘調査自体が大きな意味をもつ。これまで確認されたことのない数々の考古学資料が発見され、列島北方地域の「周縁」の歴史のなかにあらたな「時期」「文化」の存在し得ることを明らかにした、意義深い結果を生み出すことができた。

In the northern part of the archipelago, the method of archaeology is to explain the history of various cultures in Honshu, and the concept, methodology, analytical viewpoint and method are to accumulate basic data and re-discuss the work, and the cooperation between literature history and ethnology is to be important. In recent years, the archaeological culture has been established in the early stage, and the results of various sciences have been criticized. The discussion has been intensified. The methods have been established, and the methods of archaeological research have been rampant. Therefore, the first purpose of archaeology is to analyze material and cultural data and draw conclusions, and to combine the results of various sciences. This is the research on earthen artifacts in the early stages of the establishment of Aichi culture. The quality and quantity of data in the Japanese archipelago should be investigated thoroughly and the basic data should be integrated thoroughly. This study is about the implementation of the research on the foundation of "Beida-style earthen ware" and the understanding of the early stage of the establishment of the culture of "Beida-style earthen ware". The results of this research are summarized in the paper "Chronology of the types of peking earthenware", which aims at strengthening the basis for future research. The researchers started the investigation in the eastern part of the country and the eastern part of the country. The archaeological data of the northern part of the archipelago is confirmed.
