This study investigates how linguistic philosophers in ancient Indiaconceived of "Sentence Meaning" through an analysis of Sanskrit texts. Based on my past studies, in this study, I have analyzed the text of the "self-commentary" of the 2nd Chapter of the Vakyapadiya written by Bhartrhari, a linguistic philosopher in 6th Century India. And at the same time, I have tried to make a critically edited text by using XML mark-up while checking the manuscript. Consequently, I have reached the conclusion that Bhartrhari's theory on "Sentence Meaning" should be understood in a holistic context : the whole is not the sum of its parts, and it is only within the context of a sentence (whole) that a word (part) has its meaning.
