A Study to Reveal Modernity in Anglo-Irish Big House Literature and Establish a New Paradigm for Its Criticism

This study examines the Big House novels, the mainstream of the Anglo-Irish literature, written by Elizabeth Bowen and her contemporary successors, Molly Keane, William Trevor, and John Banville. The literary tradition of Big House novels has been regarded as conventional, hidebound, conservative, and old-fashioned. My research demonstrates modern elements in these writers' works that set them apart from the traditional Big House novels. It re-evaluates the Big House literature from this new perspective and offers a new critical paradigm for examining this tradition. To accomplish my purpose, I analyze Bowen and her successors' works through various approaches of contemporary literary theory, including feminist criticism, the narrative approach, psychoanalytic theory, and postmodernism.I argue that Bowen, Keane, and Trevor are modern writers who try to maintain the literary tradition that begins with Maria Edgeworth's Castle Rackrent (1800) by adding modernist elements to the tradition. In doing so, they contrast with Banville, who as a postmodernist attempts to create postmodern, international literature by subverting this tradition's stale conventions and reinventing a new form.Thus, my study contributes to a re-evaluation of Anglo-Irish Big House literature and presents a justifiably higher evaluation of this genre.
