Artemisinin as an antimalarial drug was isolated from Artemisia annua. Artemisinin biosynthetic genes, amorpha-4,11-diene synthase and a cytochrome P450 (CYP71AV1) have been cloned and characterized. However CYP71AV1 homologous genes were expressed in Artemisinin non-producing species. Homologs were analyzed for their potential oxidizing activity using incorporation experiment for non-producing species of amorpha-4,11-diene and Artemisinin intermidiates. These results showed that CYP71AV1 homologs be able to catalyze three oxidation steps at C-12 of amorpha-4,11-diene.
