大量の映像を活用しようとするとき、現在、最も大きな障害として、映像を効率的に検索・閲覧する術が確立していないことが挙げられる。例えば、文書の検索であれば、Webサーチエンジンに見られるように、検索条件としてキーワードを入力し、検索結果として該当文書のダイジェストがリスト表示されるという形が広く普及している。また、画像の検索についても、サーチエンジンのイメージ検索のように、検索条件としてキーワードを入力し、検索結果としてサムネール画像がリスト表示されるという形が一般的である。映像に対しても、これらに倣って、キーワードを検索条件とし、映像中の代表フレームのサムネール画像をリスト表示する方法がしばしば使われるが、この方法では、画像と同程度の表現力しかないため、大量の映像を対象とする場合には記述力が十分ではない。そこで、本研究では、映像の検索・閲覧手法として、起承転結や4コマ漫画で日常的に親しんでいる4コマによる表示方法の可能性に着目し、検索システムのプロトタイプを試作・評価することによってその有効性を検証した。検索条件としては、キーワードまたは4コマのスケッチを使用し、検索結果には4コマのダイジェストのリスト表示を使用する。映像の検索・閲覧インタフェースについては、これまでにも多様な研究が行われているが、4コマであることの有効性と限界を探求したこと、ならびに、10テラバイト規模の放送映像アーカイブを活用し実践的な評価を行ったことが本研究の特徴である。
