火山噴火を予知するため,火山活動にどれくらいのマグマが関与しているかを知る必要がある。活動的火山における,マグマの動きを捉えるため,地震観測や地殻変動観測が有用である。しかしながら,マグマの量を評価するためには,火山ガスの放出量が情報として必要である。本研究では,他の観測項目と比べて計測精度が低かった火山ガス放出量の計測精度を高めるために実施された。
