Violent media preferences among adolescents

This study investigated violent media preferences among adolescents through developing the Japanese version of Sensational Interests Questionnaire (Egan et al., 1999) and measuring the use of media violence across types of media. Online questionnaire surveys were administered to Japanese samples of adolescents aged 13-18 years. As a result, three factors of SIQ were found: interests in horror and occult, interests in military affairs and interests in crime and delinquency. The use of violent media was factored by the type of media, whereas the use of horror or occult media contents was factored across the type of media. The associations of violent media preferences and the use of media violence with alienation, aggression and depression were modelled, with different violent media preferences linked to different media use.
