This study focuses the concept of "development" and how it became central to several educational theories in modern Japan. Through the analysis of the Journal of Child Research and the thought of Fujikawa Yu, a main writer of the journal, we clarified that in Meiji period there were not only educational interests, but also medical and embryological ones in this concept of development. Yamashita Tokuji, who took a polemic on this issue in 1934, also inquired into primitive and even religious meanings to this idea. While there were fruitful approaches in this field of child research, they were hardly pursued by the majority of educationalists.

本研究的重点是“发展”的概念，以及它是如何成为现代日本几种教育理论的核心。本文通过对《儿童研究杂志》的分析，以及该杂志主要作者藤川裕的思想，阐明了明治时期的儿童研究发展观中不仅有教育方面的兴趣，而且还有医学和胚胎学方面的兴趣。山下德二在1934年就此问题进行了一场论战，他也探讨了这一思想的原始甚至宗教意义。虽然在这一领域的儿童研究有卓有成效的方法，他们几乎没有追求的大多数教育家。
