Humans are unique among animals in their rationality and sociability. David Hume observed that humans and other animals share the basic workings of mind, while humans pursue intellectual and social activities unlike other animals. Consideration of Hume's insight, in the light of historical as well as contemporary findings, suggests that human creativity is most clearly displayed in the pursuit of uncertain goals, and at the same time is rooted in the cognitive functions that give rise to new and adaptive behaviors in both humans and other animals.

在动物中，人类的理性和社会性是独一无二的。大卫·休谟观察到，人类和其他动物有着共同的基本思维方式，而人类则不同于其他动物，追求智力和社会活动。从历史和当代的发现来看，休谟的见解表明，人类的创造力最清楚地表现在对不确定目标的追求中，同时根植于人类和其他动物产生新的适应性行为的认知功能中。
