Developments in the World of Theatre and Entertainment in After War Berlin and Tokyo from a Political and Social Point of View

This research is based on the analysis of data such as city ordinances concerning theatre, Music hall, cinema and other establishments for entertainment from 1945 to 1962, which are stored in archives such as the Berlin Landesarchiv and the Berlin Stadtarchiv. Included are maps showing locations in West and East Berlin. For a comparison with after war entertainment establishments in Tokyo, especially ordinances concerning the National Theatre (Kokuritsu gekijo), data found in similar institutions for the same period of time were analyzed.Connecting the theaters of Berlin and Tokyo is playwright Bertolt Brecht, whose plays were frequently staged in both cities after he came back to Germany from his exile in the United States during WW II. After the war Brechts theses about theater were widely translated into Japanese and often published in magazines like "Theatreux". Brechts writings strongly influenced theatrical performances in Japan from that time on.
