Study of the factors in the establishment of Zen gardens in medieval times. philosophical background and effects of the Chinese Rinzai sect.

In this study, the author clarified part of the background of the development of Zen gardens, in order to obtain the research outcome and unified theory of landscape architecture, religious studies, and art history, regarding Zen gardens in medieval times in Japan. The research outcome included the following findings : 1) The research results of landscape architecture, religious studies, and art history were compared, and the author found the possibility of researches from the viewpoint in which Zen gardens were influenced by the cultural interpretation of Shi-taifu, which is a Chinese bureaucrat. Here, there is the direction of interdisciplinary researches as a Zen product. 2)"Kuuge-Nichiyou-Kufuu-Ryakushu"authored by Gido Shushin was delved into, and it was found that Zen gardens were used for(1) seated meditation training,(2) writing poems, and(3) viewing blossoms and landscapes. These three purposes were multilayered. Such use of gardens is recognized in the poetic emotional aspect of literature, and it was found that it was influenced by Chinese literatures and philosophies rather than the Zen doctrine.
