我々は日常生活において、コンテスト、スポーツ、ビジネスなど他人と競争しなければならない場面に遭遇する。そして、それらの競争に勝てば喜びを、負ければくやしさを感じるといったように、競争場面はしばしば我々に情動を引き起こす。また同じ報酬であっても、競争で相手に勝って得た場合と競争なしで単に得た場合では感じ方が違う。通常、前者の場合のほうがより大きな喜びを感じるだろう。逆に、単に報酬がもらえないときよりも、競争で負けて報酬がもらえないときのほうがフラストレーションを強く感じる。つまり、競争場面であるか、そうでないかによって、我々の物事に対する感じ方には違いが出てくる。このように競争に勝ったり負けたりすることは我々に様々な情動を引き起こすとともに、その競争場面は我々の認知様式に影響を与える。したがって、競争場面と非競争場面では、行動および脳活動に様々な違いがあると推定できる。我々はニホンザルに対戦ゲームをするように訓練し、ゲームで勝ったり負けたりしたときの行動および神経細胞活動を調べてきた。その結果、サルは競争時に動機づけが高まること、さらに前頭連合野の神経細胞は同じ報酬であっても競争に勝って得た報酬かどうかによって異なる活動を示すことを見出した。しかし、これまでの実験では、競争に勝てば必ず報酬が与えられたため、「競争に勝つこと」と「報酬をもらう」に対して前頭連合野の神経細胞がどのような活動を示すのかということを別々に調べることができなかった。この問題を解決するため、我々は「競争における勝ち・負け」と「報酬のあり・なし」を分離した課題を導入することにした。本年度(平成23年度)は必要なデータをすべて記録し、そのデータの解析を済ませた。得られたデータを論文としてまとめ国際的なジャーナルに投稿した(今現在審査中)。
