项目摘要

本研究は、17世紀前半セビーリャの宗教的思想環境が芸術作品の主題や造形上の特質に与えた影響を考察するものであり、最終年度に当たる今年度は、現地において作品が実際に設置されていた環境での調査を行うとともに、これまでに収集・検討した資料等について、総合的な評価を行った。具体的には、第一に、ベラスケス《東方三博士の礼拝》について、現地調査等に基づき、同時代セビーリャの主要画家による作品との根本的な差異を明確化した。例えば、旧イエズス会誓願修道院ではロエーラスによる主祭壇装飾を調査し、同じくイエズス会施設のために描かれたものでありながらベラスケスの同作品とは規模、描法が大きく異なることを確認した。セビーリャ美術館では、その他の同時代画家の作品も広く調査したが、いずれも3～5mという規模の大きさを特色とし、その中に多くの人物やモチーフを描きこむ点でベラスケスの作品とは異なっていた。この知見を踏まえ、第二に、大規模ではないが主要部分を際立たせる、極めて現実主義的なベラスケスの表現について総合的な解釈を行った。まず、ベラスケスの同作品は、イエズス会のロヨラが『霊操』に明らかにしたような、聖書の物語を眼前に現出させて「見る」という観想のプロセスに関連づけられる。重点的に調査したベラスケスの師パチェーコの『絵画芸術』では、多くのイエズス会士が取り上げられ、その考えが引用されていた。しかし、ベラスケスが師を通じてイエズス会士及びその思想の近くにいたことは事実だが、調査の結果、特定の思想がベラスケスの個別の作品に具体的な影響を与えたことは確認できていない。むしろ、現地での作品調査を通じて明らかになったのは、ベラスケスの初期様式とモンタニェースらによる彩色木彫像との表現の近さであった。モンタニェースらの彩色木彫像の重要性は2010年の展覧会で注目されたものであり、本研究を通じて、初期ベラスケスのリアリズムとの関連という観点から、さらに詳細に検討されるべきテーマであることが確認された。
