平成24年度は、会津若松と郡山をフィールドに、それぞれ以下のようなことを研究し、明らかにした。まず会津若松に関しては、簗田氏の家の経営について検討した。特に、商人司としての側面がどのように変化するのかに注目して研究した。その結果、簗田氏は18世紀以降、商人司が本来持っていた商人を統括する権限を喪失し、一介の町役人として存在していたことが明らかになった。ただ、町役人としての職務の中に、会津若松を通過する商人の荷物の改めがあるところを見ると、商人司としての職務が町役人のそれの中に引き継がれていることがうかがえる。また、簗田氏はこの時期、小規模ながら町屋敷経営を行っており、こうしたところから収入を得ていたものと思われる。次に郡山に関しては、永原家の経営分析を行った。永原家は城下では比較的大規模な酒造屋であった。しかし、18世紀末に一時、酒造経営を休止する。そして、それと時を同じくして酒造仲間内の役職である酒造改役を降板する。このことから、酒造屋経営の盛衰と酒造仲間内での地位のあり方は、相互に連関しあっていると評価できる。また、郡山の株仲間と町についても分析を試みた。その結果、近世半ば以降、郡山では株仲間の種類と町域との間に関係性は見られないことが判明した。以上の点から、地方城下町の社会構造の一端を、家の経営・仲間組織・町の三つの要素から明らかにし得たと言える。
