The phenomenon on the prevention of dental caries of maltotriitol [4-O-(4-O-α-D-Glucopyranosyl-α-D-glucopyranosyl)-D-glucitol] and one of the rare sugars was studied in the present study. The inhibitory effects of maltotriitol on mutans streptococci were different among species, and, in particular, the growth of Streptococcus sobrinus was inhibited by maltotriitol. The rare sugar was not fermented by plaque bacteria in vivo and in vitro.
