项目摘要

本研究の目的は、国内外の資料を用いて「からゆき」の動的な歴史的変容を性意識の変化と国際情勢とを合わせてみていくことで、開国以降の日本人女性たちの移動の歴史を明らかにすることである。平成23年度は、平成22年度から引き続き「からゆき」の渡航に関わった渡航幇助者たちの実態を明らかにするべく資料の収集と整理に傾注した。資料の中心は九州の地方新聞であり、主に「密航婦」検挙報道の記事を対象としている。これまでの「からゆき」研究でさほど検討されてこなかったのが、誘拐者とそのネットワークの分析だが、資料を検討していくと「からゆき」が渡航するまでに実に多くの人びとが関わっていることが判明する。平成22年度に引き続き、平成23年度の資料収集によって得られた資料によって今後もその分析に努めている途上だが、「からゆき」渡航に介在している人物たちには「外国人」や「女性」の姿も見えてくるし、その女性たちの職業も髪結いや女工など多様である。もちろん、近親者や縁故関係による呼び寄せもみられる。また、その役割も密航周旋屋から外国渡航船乗船までの一時的な逗留場所提供などそれぞれ役割が割り振られていたことも記事から読み取ることができた。今後もより一層の資料の拡充と整理に努めながら、これまで「誘拐者」と語られてきたその言葉の内実を検討していきたいと考えている。この作業は、地域に住む女性たちが「からゆき」となるまでのプロセスを解明することに資料的な足がかりを得ることを目的としている。さらに、ネットワーク内における渡航幇助者の役割や相互関係の解明がすすめば、日本のみに留まらない国際的な女性の移動と権力関係が視野に入ってくるものと考えている。
