项目摘要

本年度は、前年度の研究蓄積を多方面に発展させ、3本の査読付き論文として公表した。まず論文「九条兼実の徳政思想」では、摂関家貴族たる九条兼実の徳政思想について検討した。兼実は仏法王法相依論の主張者であったことから、仏法に依存しておりその徳政思想は現実から遊離した空虚なものでしかなかった、と理解されがちだった。しかし本稿では、兼実の徳政思想は先民と福善禍淫を本質とするものであり、その政治行動には時宜に応じて工夫を施した形跡が随所に認められることを明らかにした。次に論文「鎌倉平民仏教中心史観の形成過程」では、今日に至るまで日本仏教史の研究に多大な影響を及ぼしている鎌倉平民仏教中心史観について検討した。その結果、この史観は仏教史研究や新仏教運動の成果として評し難く、また決して自宗を擁護するための発明でなかったという知見が得られた。そして論文「「興福寺奏状」複合説」では、これまで法然房源空の専修念仏宗を弾圧することが目的の文書だとされてきた、「興福寺奏状」について検討した。今日伝存する「興福寺奏状」は2通の訴状によって構成されており、また『三長記』の記事によって、元久2、3年の訴訟では興福寺からやはり2通の訴状が呈出されたことを確認できる。本稿ではこの事実に注目し、2通の訴状はそれぞれ異なる主体が異なる時期に呈出したものであり、後に誤って「興福寺奏状」として複合されてしまった、という仮説を提唱した。これら3本の論文に共通する問題意識は、民衆仏教史観の克服である。本年度の研究によって、貴族の兼実は「反民衆」であり「民衆」仏教者の法然は「興福寺奏状」によって弾圧された、という通説が明治以来の偏見であることを示唆できたと考えられる。歴史、政治、宗教という思想区分を横断し、摂関院政期における思想世界の全体像を更新するという当初の研究目標は、大いに達成されたと言ってよいであろう。
