项目摘要

本年度は、若者ムスリムがイギリスという世俗化された社会のなかで、どのように自身のアイデンティティを管理し、社会への統合を実現しているのかを明らかにすることを目的として研究をすすめた。イギリスにおいて若者ムスリムの社会統合をめぐる問題は、2001年のアメリカ同時多発テロ、北イングランド暴動、そしてとりわけ2005年のロンドン同時爆破テロによって生じることとなった。これらの事件は若者ムスリムの信仰の高まりに起因するものとして理解され、そのことがイギリス社会への統合を妨げていると指摘されている。そこで、若者ムスリムがどのようにイギリス社会に統合しているのかについて調査をおこなった。具体的には、イギリスのコベントリー市の若者ムスリムのインタビュー調査をもとに、その社会への適応戦略、およびそれを可能にしている諸資源について、12組30人〓若者ムスリムへの70-100分の半構造化による集団インタビューをおこなった。調査において、世俗社会の生活となじまないとされるイスラームを信奉する若者が、どのようにより広い社会に適応しているのか、そのためにどのような自己呈示をおこない、またその複雑なアイデンティティを管理しているのかという点にフォーカスを当てた。調査の結果、若者ムスリムは、民族的伝統に由来する「文化」とイスラームの「宗教」とを区別し、後者を前者に優先させることにより、イギリス社会への適応をおこなっていることがわかった。このような若者ムスリムの姿は、教育施設の充実やインターネットの利用を通じたイスラームの知識の探求への努力や、超多様化する環境のなかで自身の多様性を増し、また他者の多様性の尊重することを学ぶことを通じて達成されていることが示された。以上の調査結果は、一方で、現代社会におけるアイデンティティの「雑種性」をめぐる理論的課題、他方でムスリムの社会統合をめぐる政策的議論に対する重要な貢献をおこなう可能性を秘めている。
